The Moon Festival or Mid-Autumn Festival is a major Chinese holiday. Holiday traditions include watching the Harvest Moon, eating mooncakes, and enjoying the family gathering. The Harvest Moon is known to be at its fullest and brightest during this lunar time after a bountiful harvest season. The festival is based on the lunar calendar and varies each year. For 2025, the holiday is October 6th.
The holiday is mainly celebrated in China, but also significantly in other East and Southeast Asian countries like Vietnam, Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, and other Chinese communities worldwide. Customs vary by region.
Sharing mooncakes is one of the hallmark traditions of the festival. In Chinese culture, a round shape symbolizes completeness and reunion. Thus, the sharing and eating of round mooncakes among family members during the week of the festival signifies the completeness and unity of families.
Cakes by Happy Eatery makes its mooncakes by hand one piece at a time. We are introducing some classic flavors with a twist, including our limited Pumpkin Patch and Black Sesame Peanut Butter mooncakes.
Mooncakes and The Mid-Autumn Festival are similar to pies and Thanksgiving. Our Cantonese-style mooncakes are rich pastry and has a golden-brown pastry crust with a sweet filling. To serve, cut the mooncakes into wedges and serve with a cup of hot tea.
