Asia’s Mid-Autumn Festival is one of the oldest traditional holidays and is a lunar celebration of the autumn harvest and is synonymous with mooncakes. These pastries are usually marked with the characters meaning “harmony”, “longevity”, or intricate floral patterns. These soft cakes are enjoyed at gatherings and gifted to family, friends, and colleagues.
The Mid-Autumn Festival and mooncakes represent unity and family reunions. Family and friends gather for a meal to share a bountiful harvest feast, similar to a Thanksgiving dinner. The holiday based on the Asian lunar calendar is the 15th day of the 8th month, or for 2024, Tuesday September 17th. During the weeks leading to and on the holiday, mooncakes are enjoyed like pies for Thanksgiving.
Mooncakes are typically round and made with sweet beans, candied fruit, and/or nut filled pastries. There are many regional variations throughout Asia. Cakes by Happy Eatery hand rolls and shapes each mooncake influenced from the Cantonese region, a province in southern China. Some mooncakes have a salted yolk center to represent the moon. The cured yolk enhances the sweet bean/fruit filling with a taste like salted caramel. To serve, slice the mooncake into wedges and enjoy each wedge with a hot cup of tea.
The Pineapple Prosperity Fish is Cakes by Happy Eatery’s signature mooncake. In the Chinese culture, fish symbolizes prosperity, and pineapple is the universal symbol of hospitality. Together, we wish all a prosperous and hospitable gathering.
